African Safari - 2026

Wednesday 30 September'26 - Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) [the 1st is further down this page]

Awake early again this morning but as the tour pick-up was 0745, not an issue really.   A breakfast that was rather filling and then down to Reception and await the tour transfer to Victoria Falls.   All I have read and seen about this amazing natural wonder, gave me the impression I was about to witness something amazing and I wasn't let down.   OMG!!!   Nothing could have prepared me for the breath taking beauty of this place.

We were the only 3 people on the tour and our guide, Judy, was very knowledgable and was more than happy to answer the many questions we asked.  During our walk along the Zimbabwean edge of the gorge, we came across a few animals.  The 1st being a female Bushbuck (the males have antlers) that was feeding on the grass and then a Warthog mum and  her 2 offspring that were feeding on the grubs and worms in the soil, which they were digging up with the noses and tusks.  Last but by no means least, a family of Baboon's resting in a tree.  1.5 hours later and many steps, we were back at the entrance getting ready to cross into Zambia, for a walk along their side of the Falls.

One thing I discovered during my research for the trip was at the Falls, on the Zambian side, there is an area they call Devil's Falls, which is accessible via Livingstone Island (yes, Dr Livingstone and it was the place of his settlement), where you actually enter the river and sit in rock pools literally on the edge of the falls.  As we were passing that area, a group were preparing to undertake this.

It was then time to cross the border via a bridge over the Gorge.  Being a border, Judy had to pass us onto her Zambian counterpart Tim, who helped us pass Immigration before taking us along the Zambian edge of the gorge, which provided a very different perspective.

After an hours walk, it was back at the entrance to the Park, where we were entertained by a group of Baboon's, before again passing Immigration and then back across the border, where Tim handed us onto our driver for the trip back to our accommodation.  After some lunch and then a couple of hours downtime, we were once again met by Judy who drove us to our next little "expedition", a sunset river cruise on the Zambezi River.

The cruise was very relaxing, with drinks included as well as what was advertised as a snack (although we didn't need dinner after).   We were treated to seeing a few crocodiles resting on the bank, many hippos in the shallows but most were just keeping an eye out so they kept submerging as the various boats passed and then a herd of elephants having their evening drink.   The sunset was spectacular and then back to Insika Lodge for some sleep.

FUN FACT - During the wet season, it is estimated that at least 58,000 cubic litres of water pass through the Falls every minute...

A very memorable day is an understatement!
