SCandinavian Cruises - 2026
Monday 4 May'26 - London
1st item on today's agenda - Happy Birthday Di, and for those of you that understand, May the Fourth be with you!
Now that that's been dealt with, it was time to go and look at some other relics... But the next thing to be done was a little sustenance!
1st stop after that was St Paul's. It was a nice leisurely walk (5-7 minutes) from the hotel and like so many of these buildings, very ornate with some amazing sculptures and stained glass windows. It also contained the crypt's of Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington.
We then proceeded to walk along the Thames towards our next port of call, the London Eye. An imposing structure and it was very busy, as today was a Bank Holiday, but luckily, we had Fast Track tickets which saw us literally just walk straight in without having to queue that was already quite long. It takes at least 13 minutes to complete a total rotation, and at its "fastest", travels at 0.6mph. What amazing views.
After that, a walk past Parliament House and Big Ben before finding a nice little cafe for lunch on the edge of St Jame's Park. Then off to Westmister Abbey.
Again, very interesting. So much history. So many Kings' & Queen's buried there along with many other important people. My favourite area was Knight's Hall but as hard as I tried, I couldn't find the pews of my 3 favourites; these being Sir Loin of Beef, Sir Cumference of the Circle and Sir Cumnavigate the Earth. I also found where the Aussie rep sits when attending anything at the Abbey. I particularly thought the chair the current King Charles was crowned in, was rather "interesting".
A very enjoyable couple of hours there before heading back to the hotel, with at least 20,600+ steps being undertaken... Dinner was at a local pub just directly opposite our hotel on the other embankment of the Thames, the Swan Inn before crashing just on 2100 for a well deserved sleep.
